THE ORIGIN OF MASONRY
I. From Operative To Speculative

The most prolific source of Masonic literature is that dealing with the origin of the Craft. It is a theme which has filled many volumes, and one which invariably follows the same pattern to the point of monotony.
Practically all research along these lines starts with the stone masons of Europe, and ends up with the guilds, or associations, of ancient Rome. The Temple itself as a source of origin is avoided for two
reasons, the first of which is a fear of encroaching upon the secret work of the Order. The s econd reason is a more logical one, for it is founded in the fact that very little is known about the Temple. There were three Temples built at Jerusalem, each of which was to replace an earlier structure. The last Temple was built by Herod, and is supposedly described by Josephus, the historian. He was an eyewitness to the
destruction of this last Temple, but his lack of technical knowledge is painfully evident from his description of its structural details. The Temple previous to Herod's was built by Zeru bbabel, a very brief
account of which is set forth in the Book of Ezra. The so-called first Temple was built by Solomon, and a fairly complete description of it is set forth in the first Book of Kings.
However, Masonry was founded long before the Temple of Solomon was
built. The identification of our Craft with the Temple came about
through the ambition of David. It was he who realized the importance of the Tabernacle of Moses, and planned the Temple as s substitute
therefor. Through it he sought credit for the establishment of the house and kingdom of God. This ambition of David is described in the second Book of Samuel, but more particularly in the words of II Samuel 7:13,
"He shall build an house for m y name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever." These words are supposedly the Lord's, uttered through the medium of Nathan, the prophet. However, they were prompted by David, for Nathan was a member of David's court.
What David really sought was a vehicle which would perpetuate the divine power of the Tabernacle. That this structure was possessed of such power is quite evident from the fact that, within its confines, Moses
established the word of God among men. The Word has come down to us practically intact in the form of the Pentateuch, or first five books of the Bible; and the House still stands today! Its original form is
essentially unchanged, although some of its parts have been destroyed by the violence of fire a nd the quantity of water, which have been visited upon it from time to time. This House and this Book were founded at one and the same time, and both are an integral part of Masonry.
This particular phase of the inquiry into the origin of Masonry deals with the shift from operative to speculative, for our ritual tells us that we no longer work in operative, but speculative Masonry only. An entirely new approach to this subject is to be had through the medium which has never changed since our Order was founded. That medium is the Holy Bible, which is placed in the same setting as Moses placed it in the beginning. Save for the legendary part of our ritual, it contains all the factual deta ils of our Craft. When these factual details are worked out to their ultimate conclusion, it will be found that the
legendary part of our ritual comprises but a very small percentage of the whole. That the operative phase of our Order was in effect during the time of Moses is stated in Exodus 1:11, "And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pitham and Raamses." It was from the builders of these two cities that Moses recruited the founders of our Order. They were the enslaved workers of Ramses II.
Ramses II reigned over Egypt from 1292 to 1225 B.C. His reign was
singularly marked by a wealth of building activities. He completed
Seti's Temple at Abydos, and added to the Temples at Luxor and Karnak.
He constructed at Thebes the great mortuary Temple of the Rameseum, with its colossal statues of himself; and he built the rock-cut temple at Abu-Simble. During the early part of his reign Ramses II engaged in an important campaign against the Hittites, and fought an indecisive battle at Kadesh on the Oront es River in Syria. In these forays across
Palestine, and into Syria, the victor found a means to augment his
labour supply in the form of prisoners of war. They were put to work building such cities as Pithom and Raamses, and it was from their ranks that Moses recruited the people of his Exodus. It is specifically stated that some of them worked in brick and mortar (Exodus 1:14). Any attempt to connect our membership with operative masonry at a later period in history is an inconsiste ncy, for it was these b uilders of Pithom and Raamses who established speculative Masonry when they built the
Tabernacle on Mt. Rinai.
The Tabernacle was really the first Temple, for it was, and still is, a masterpiece of the builder's art. Every part of it has a symbolic
meaning far beyond anything incorporated into the Temple built by
Solomon. The superb engineering employed in the design of the Tabernacle indicates that several years of study went into this feature alone prior to its actual building. Since Moses was a royal scribe by calling, he undoubtedly planned the Tabernacle in collaboration with an architect.
This period of planni ng took place while they were still in Egypt, for a great many of its features were borrowed from those to be found in the Temples along the Nile. Its design was too intricate to have been
improvised in the desert of Sinai.
Ramses II died in 1225 B.C., and was succeeded by Merneptah. From all the evidence available, it is quite plain the Exodus must have taken place fairly close to this change in the administration of the affairs of Egypt. In summing up, operative Masonry flourished during the reign of Ramses II, and the transition to speculative Masonry took place
during the reign of Merneptah.
The transition to the speculative phase is definitely stated in the words of Exodus 36:8, "And every wise hearted man among them that
wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined linen." This is the first of a long list of specifications, wherein Moses describes the manner in which the Tabernacle was built. It is placed first because these ten curtains of fine twined linen symbolized a pair of hands raised in supplication. Symbolically, they were so
placed that Moses might tell us tha t no man should ever enter upon any great or important undertaking without first invoking the blessing of God.
As a protege of the royal household, Moses was raised in the pagan
worship of Osiris, a deified king. The domain of Osiris was centred in an underground heaven, sealed with the doom of perpetual darkness. This great king of the spiritual world was flanked with a myriad of lesser deities, to whom tribute had to be paid before the novitiate could hope to enter. Associated with this monopoly of the Egyptian hierarchy was the tyranny and oppression of its rulers.
As Moses grew to manhood he saw that the beneficence of God came from above, and that it was the Light from the celestial sphere which caused all nature to blossom forth and prosper. His problem was to present this new doctrine to a people whose ancestors had been steeped in paganism for centuries. To this end he endowed his House with the attributes of the heavens by making every part ther symbolic of some feature of the celestial sphere. This master plan, of course, called for the utmost secrecy, and w as tied in with a key. The plan itself he concealed by scattering it throughout all five of the books of the Pentateuch, but the key was left for future ages to discover. Since every one of the
7,625 parts of the Tabernacle played a part in its symbolic meaning, the
'building of this House coincided with the commencement of the
speculative phase of Masonry.

POPE BENEDICT XVI HAS SHARPLY CONDEMNED A GROUP OF DISSIDENT AUSTRIAN PRIESTS AND LAYMEN FOR QUESTIONING KEY TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
The group, known as the Pfarrer Initiative, has challenged the church on topics such as priestly celibacy and its ban on female priests.
Speaking during a Maundy Thursday mass in the Vatican, the Pope said he would not tolerate disobedience.
Correspondents say the pontiff's criticism was unusually outspoken.
About 15% of Austria's 2,000 priests signed the initiative's call for disobedience in June last year.
The appealcalls for "long-needed reforms" and the "admission of women and married people to the priesthood".
The Pope said he understood that the priests were acting out of concern for the Church and thought drastic action was needed.
"But is disobedience really a way to do this?" he asked worshippers gathered in St Peter's basilica.
'OWN PREFERENCES'
He accused the group of making "a desperate push to do something to change the Church in accordance with one's own preferences and ideas".
The Pope added that his teachings on the subjects raised by the group were not his own, but the Church's.
"We preach not private theories and opinions, but the faith of the Church, whose servants we are," he said.
He also directly rebuffed demands for the Church to allow the ordination of women, "for which Blessed Pope John Paul II stated irrevocably that the Church has received no authority from the Lord".
Maundy Thursday is the day when Catholic priests traditionally renew the vows they made when they were ordained, including that of celibacy, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome.

Pearl Curran began channeling messages from Patience
Worth in 1913 by means of a Ouija board.
One cool autumn evening in 1919, a crowd of prominent New Yorkers jammed the parlor of an East Side town house to meet a writing prodigy named Patience Worth. A prolific charmer who was known for her flashy verbal stunts and quick wit, Patience dictated two original poems-about Russia and the Red Cross-in rapid succession, followed by a lyrical tribute to an editor friend. Though she seemed to compose the works on the spot, her words flowed with the quality of messages punched out by teletype. Poet Edgar Lee Masters was among the astonished guests. "There is no doubt...she is producing remarkable literature," the author of Spoon River Anthology told a reporter, though "how she does it I cannot say." Nor could he say how Patience looked, though she was thought to be young and pretty, with wavy red hair and large brown eyes. No one, however, actually saw her. She wasn't real. She was an ambitious, hard-working spirit.

Speaking through a Ouija board operated by Pearl Lenore Curran, a St. Louis housewife of limited education, Patience Worth was nothing short of a national phenomenon in the early years of the 20th century. Though her works are virtually forgotten today, the prestigious Braithwaite anthology listed five of her poems among the nation's best published in 1917, and the New York Times hailed her first novel as a "feat of literary composition." Her output was stunning. In addition to seven books, she produced voluminous poetry, short stories, plays and reams of sparkling conversation-nearly four million words between 1913 and 1937. Some evenings she worked on a novel, a poem and a play simultaneously, alternating her dictation from one to another without missing a beat. "What is extraordinary about this case is the fluidity, versatility, virtuosity and literary quality of Patience's writings, which are unprecedented in the history of automatic writing by mediums," says Stephen Braude, a professor of philosophy at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a past president of the American Parapsychological Association, who has written widely on paranormal phenomena.
Almost overnight, Patience transformed Pearl Curran from a restless homemaker plagued by nervous ailments into a busy celebrity who traveled the country giving performances starring Patience. Night after night Pearl, a tall, blue-eyed woman in a fashionable dress, would sit with her Ouija board while her husband, John, recorded Patience's utterances in shorthand. Those who witnessed the performances, some of them leading scholars, feminists, politicians and writers, believed they'd seen a miracle. "I still confess myself completely baffled by the experience," Otto Heller, dean of the Graduate School at Washington University in St. Louis, recalled years later.
Through Pearl, Patience claimed to be an unmarried Englishwoman who had emigrated to Nantucket Island in the late 1600s and been killed in an Indian raid. He got the idea while on a photo expedition to the town of Gouda, taking pictures of several generations of Moroccan-Dutch citizens. He says it made him realise how their lives are interwoven with religion: "They have their hair cut in the mosque, they shop in the mosque, their children go to religion classes in the mosque."
Another inspiration for Seesing was his mother, who belonged to a Roman Catholic parish. The photographer said, "After my father's death she joined the choir, participated in activities of the Senior Citizens' Union and worked as a volunteer. The parish gave her a happy old age."
SHAMANISM

Eddy Seesing himself broke with the Catholic church because he disagreed with its views on women, gays and birth control. On his journeys he got in touch with Buddhism and later with Shamanism, a natural religion which became his own. His twin children were recently accepted into the religion with a welcoming ceremony. Seesing first came across Shamanism in Canada, where he spent two weeks with a shaman. He particularly praises his extraordinary experiences during the sweat lodge ceremony: "In the heat you experience a particular spirituality."
Seesing hopes his book will make it clear how many similarities there are in many of the sermons, and in baptising and sacrificing ceremonies. But, he says, "I'm also making an effort to show the cultural differences. We should stop trying to convert each other and be glad about the variety."
An exhibition of the photographs published in Religie Nu/Religion Now is being held in the Rotterdam Kunsthal until 12 February 2012. The book, which has text in both Dutch and English, is published by Thoth in Bussum.

Dear Servant of God,
Knowing that you desire to serve the Lord with all your heart, I share this letter with you. Perhaps you have been struggling with the same situation.
On November 22nd, I sent the facts contained in this letter to all masonic bodies of which I am a member. I invite you to prayerfully read it. It will explain why I as a Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York am requesting a demit from all bodies of the masonic fraternity. There is much more that I could share.
I would be happy to share more if it will help you in the Lord's service.
Many have asked me if Freemasonry is a religion. I have always responded
"No". Others have told me that it is a religion. Study has revealed the fact that learned writers in the fraternity say MASONRY IS A RELIGION. The Lord Jesus Christ said, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word is established" (Matthew 18:16). In order to be brief, I will quote only four masonic authorities that masonry is a religion.
Albert Mackey, one of the most well known masonic authorities, wrote in A LEXICON OF FREEMASONRY (Pg. 402): "The religion, then, masonry, is pure theism...".
Albert Pike, the most important of all American masonic authorities wrote in MORALS AND DOGMA (Pg. 213-214): "Every masonic lodge is a temple of religion, and its teachings are instructions in religion...this is true religion revealed to the ancient patriarchs; which masonry has taught for many centuries, and which it will continue to teach as long as time endures.
J.S.M. Ward, a masonic authority who has written several important books on masonry, wrote in his book FREEMASONRY: ITS AIMS & IDEALS (Pg.185): "I consider freemasonry is a significantly organized school of mysticism to be entitled to be called a religion." Ward continues on page 187,
"Freemasonry...taught that each man can by himself, work out his own conception of god and thereby achieve salvation." It holds that there are many paths that lead to the throne of the all-loving father which all start from a common source. Freemasonry believes, according to Ward, "that though these paths appear to branch off in various directions, yet they all reach the same ultimate goal, and that to some men, one path is better and to other, another.
"Frank C. Higgins, a high mason, wrote in ANCIENT FREE MASONRY (Pg.10), "It is true that Freemasonry is the parent of all religionl"
These masonic witnesses all agree in their doctrine that masonry is, indeed, a religion. It is necessary now to ascertain whether masonry is a true religion or a false religion. In an article entitled, "HOW TO
RECOGNIZE A FALSE RELIGION" (Faith for the Family Nov/Dec 1974), a
prominent Christian leader wrote: "All false religions,have some things in common. Here are three simple tests by which any religion should be judged;
FIRST: What is its attitude toward the Bible?
SECOND: Any religious teaching should be tested by this question; What is its attitude toward Jesus Christ?
THIRD: In judging a religious system, we should ask, What is its attitude toward the blood of Jesus Christ!"
According to these three tests, masonry is a false religion manifesting a satanic attitude toward the Bible, the Deity of Jesus Christ, an dht eblood atonement of Jesus Christ. In order to establish this charge, keep in mind the Wordo our Lord Jesus Christ who said, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established. Please consider now the
testimony of masonic authorities which reveal masonry's satanic attitude toward the Bible, the Deity of Jesus Christ and the vicarious atonement for the sins of mankind by the shedding of christ's blood on the cross.
Joseph Ford Newton, a famous authority and writer, in an article entitled
"The Bible and Masonry" wrote "The bible so rich in symbolism is itself a symbol...thus, by the very honor which masonry pays the Bible, it teaches us to revere every book of faith in which men find help for today and hope for tomorrow, joining hands with the man of Islam as he takes his oath on the Koran, with the Hindu as he makes covenant with God upon the book that he loves best."
Albert Pike, in Morals & Dogma, wrote (Pg.718) "Masonry propagates no creed except it's own most simple sublime one; that universal reigion, taught by nature and reason."
One who is truly born-again can see from the above statement that masonry totally rejects the doctrine of an infallible, God-breathed, inerrant Bible.
According to the Second Test, masonry is a false religion because it totally rejects the crucial doctrine of the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.
J.D. Buck, M.D., another masonic writer of importance, in his book
Symbolism of Mystic Masonry wrote (Pg.57) "In the early Church as in the secret doctrine, there was not one Christ for the world but a potential Christ in every man. Theologians first made a fettish of the impersonal, Omnipresent divinity; and then tore the Christos from the hearts of all humanity in order to Deify Jesus; that they might have a God-Man
particularly their own."
One would have to look far and wide in the writings of false teachers to find statements more blasphemous than this about the person of Jesus Christ, my Lord.
According to the Third Test, masonry is a fase religion because masonry dogmatically rejects the doctrine of salvaion from the penalty of sin by faith in the vicarious atonement of Christ's shed blood on the cross.
Thomas Milton Steward, another masonic author, in his book Symbolic Teaching on Masonry and Its Message, to support his doctrine quoted favorable an apostate Episcopal minister who wrote (Pg.177), "Did Jesus count Himself, conceive of Himself as a proprietary sacrifice and of His work as an expiation? The only answer possible is, clearly, He did
not...He does not call Himself the world's priest, or the world's victim."
Salvation by Faith in the vicarious atonement are not "ingnorant
perversions of the original doctrines" as masonry teaches, but they are vital ingredients of the Glorious Gospel of Christ, which is the power of God unto Salvation to everyone who believes. THEREFORE, masonry fails all three tests. It manifests a satanic attitude toward the Bible, the Deity of Christ, and the vicarious atonement. In addition to failing these tests, there is much more proof that masonry is a false religion.
For instance, Henry C. Clausen, 33 decree, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council 33 Decree mother council of the world, in the NEW AGE, November, 1970, (Pg.4) wrote regarding masonry, "It is dedicated to bringing about the Fatherhood of God, the Brotherhood of Man, and making better men in a better world."
The doctrine of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man is not found in the Bible. It is a doctrine taught consistently by apostates.
Also, the Bible makes it crystal clear that no organization, masonry included, can make better men. Only God can make better men!
According to a masonic creed, found in the Masonic Bible, masonry teaches that "character determines destiny."
The teaching that character determines destiny is a false doctrine of the Arch Deceiver of Souls. The Bible says, "There is none that doeth good,"
and "For by Grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;
it is a gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast."
Masonry is anti-Christian in its teachings. For example, J.M. Ward in FREEMASONRY - ITS AIMS AND IDEALS wrote (Pg.187), "I boldly avere that freemasonry is a religion, yet it no way conflicts with any other religion, unless that religion holds that no one outside its portals can be saved."
Ward, in his statement, reveals the fact that masonry has no conflict with any apostate religion on the face of the earth, but he also reveals that masonry is in conflict with Christianity. The Bible says, "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we MUST be save" (Acts 4:12). Jesus said, "No man cometh unto the Father but by Me." (Jn. 14:6). The Bible is plainly teaching that there is only one way to heaven and the is Christ.
A prominent college president said of masonry, "It is a luciferian
religion. We are fully aware of its diabolical origin and purpose. I believe that any born-again Christian, when the facts from the lips of masonic writers themselves are presented showing that masonry is a religion and is the worship of Satan, will immediately withdraw." To this I must add my hearty agreement!
The God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the only True and Living God, has clearly commanded Christian, "Be ye not unequally yolked together with unbelievers, and swear not at all, and have no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."
Charles Finney, the famed evangelist who God used to bring a revival in America in the 1830's, in his book, FREEMASONRY wrote (Pg.115), "Surely, if masons really understood what Masonry is, as it is delineated in these books, no Christian Mason would think himself to remain at liberty to remain another day a member of the fraternityl. It is as plain as possible that a man knowing what it is, and embracing it in his heart, cannot be a Christian man. To say he can is to belie the very nature of Christianity."
For me, the signs of the time compared with prophetic Scripture, make it apparent that we are livin in the last days prior to the Rapture of the Church. Satan is hard at work trying to hinder believers' spiritual growth, as well as trying to keep the unsaved from entering God's Family.
Freemasonry, I have come to believe, is one of Satan's master deceptions.
Many ministers, elders, deacons, trustees, and Sunday School teachers belong to this cult. Today, my membership ends! Today, a new ministry begins. There is a tremendous need to scrutinize the cultic nature of Freemasonry in view of the massive infiltration of its effects on the working body of the Church. It should be exposed to the True Light - Jesus Christ!
